Marbled Distress Paint Backgrounds

07/13/2022

Hi everyone! I am here today to share how I created a fun set of cards with Bold Text 1 dies from the Tim Holtz/Sizzix Chapter 1 release. You can catch the replay of Tim’s LIVE on his YouTube channel. I am honored to be a Tim Holtz maker and am so excited to inspire you more with his products!!!

Marbled Distress Paint Backgrounds

Note: I am sharing a link at the end of this post of a fun, quick reel over on Instagram sharing my process for these backgrounds

For these cards, I used Distress White Heavystock, Distress Kraft Heavystock, and Distress Paint

  • Picked Raspberry
  • Spiced Marmalade
  • Squeezed Lemonade
  • Twisted Citron
  • Salvaged Patina
  • Shaded Lilac

Tim Holtz/ Sizzix, Bold Text 1 Tim Holtz/ Idea-ology, Metallic Sticker Book

I also used Tim Holtz/Sizzix Bold Text 1 dies and sentiments from the Tim Holtz/Ideaology Metallic Sticker book.

I started by working on the replacement Tonic Craft Mat for Tim’s Glass mat. I have a glass table top, so this craft mat clings to my desk and works perfectly.

I put a little bit of each paint color, in rainbow order onto the craft mat. You can have the colors touch, or you can have them separate as shown above. You will get different looks when you switch things up, and I encourage you to play and experiment!

I then spritzed the paint with water, using the Distress Sprayer. I made sure there were water droplets around the paint as well. I misted water onto the paper surface I was using. This is why I chose Distress Heavystock, so it could withstand some water, and paint.

I then swiped the Heavystock into the paint, smearing the paint across the surface. If the paint isn’t mixed too much, you can go back in to add paint where there might not be color yet.

I then dried the backgrounds with the Ranger Heat Tool. Using this instead of an embossing gun I don’t need to worry about the paint being blown around the surface, or the surface being scorched.

Once the backgrounds were dry, I used the largest stitched rectangle from Lawn Fawn’s Outside In Stitched Rectangles to add nice stitching.

I then diecut sentiments out of the backgrounds using Bold Text 1. Keeping the cut-out letters in place, I added some Spellbinders Best Ever Craft Tape, which is a low-tack tape. This keeps the cut-out letters in place, where I then added some Distress Collage medium to the backs of the letters and added the sentiment to some white cardstock that I already cut out with the largest stitched rectangle from Lawn Fawn’s Outside In Stitched Rectangles to add nice stitching.

Once the sentiment was in place, I gently peeled away the Best Ever Craft Tape.

The background that was all Distress Paint, with the sentiment cut out of it, I used foam tape to add to the card bases. In the larger letters, if there was a centerpiece, I would be sure to add that as well, like the center of an “o”.

This is how I easily got two cards from one background!

I added the small metallic sentiment strips with white foam strips. I also added some sequins using Trinity Stamps Pickup Tool and Distress Collage Medium.

I love how different the paints look on Distress White Heavystock vs Distress Kraft Heavystock. I also love the different looks of using both parts of the die-cut sentiments.  This was a really fun way to create a stack of cards to share with friends throughout the year!

Check out the tutorial reel I put together and shared over on Instagram!

Beautiful! Could you do this background (marble) with another medium like stains? I can’t find the paint anywhere near me.

I love how beautiful your cards are, Jenn. I’m always looking for creative ideas to make multiple cards that I can mix up sentiments to put on them.

WOW! Using these paints produced a wonderful result. And being that we are all conservative making two cards with one panel was ingenious. Thank you for sharing this great idea.
