In March 2005, I hit “publish” on my very first blog post. At the time, I had no idea what I was starting—I just thought it would be fun to join in with all the other “cool kids” who were sharing online. Twenty years and over 2,400 posts later, here we are. And what better way to celebrate than with an Inspiration Party—where some of my crafty friends are joining in, creating projects inspired by my past posts!
A Little About Me
If you’re new around here, hi! I’m Jenn Shurkus, a self-proclaimed “creative chick.” That name actually started back when I managed a local papercrafting store, the team of us who worked there were the “creative chicks,” and the nickname just stuck. I live on Cape Cod, where I am basically part mermaid (flip-flops 363 days a year is not an exaggeration). I share my home with my boyfriend Chris and our two beloved kitties, Gus Gus and Jac, who even have their own Instagram account.
I teach papercrafting classes both in-person and online, travel to trade shows with Lawn Fawn, and host big creative events like Crop on the Cape and Creative Journey Art Retreat (both virtual and in-person). I feel incredibly fortunate to spend my days teaching, creating, and connecting with all of you.
Looking Back
When I first started blogging, it was mainly a way to share class schedules and store events. When the store closed, my blog became a way to stay connected with my students and friends, and to continue inspiring them, even from afar. Over time, it grew into a creative diary of sorts, filled with projects, techniques, and little snippets of my life.
Some fun early memories:
- In 2005, I was sharing class projects (remember Chatterbox papers?) and even met Jennifer McGuire for the first time after admiring her work online.
- That same year I had my very first dedicated crafty space, and very modest stamp shelves!
- By 2006, I was traveling to teach all over New England and logged 72 in-person classes with more than 550 students.
- I’ll never forget seeing Tim Holtz demo Distress Inks at CHA in 2006, magic in action!
- I also taught my first Advent Calendar class that year, which grew into a beloved tradition for many seasons to come.
My blog has changed a lot since those days. In the beginning, I shared many personal life snippets (does anyone remember my kitty Watcher? Or my TGIHarley posts?). These days, social media has taken over some of that role, but the heart of my blog has always been about creativity and connection.
Fast Forward to Today
Now, 20 years later, this little blog has grown into a thriving community. Through my posts, classes, events, and my {creative chick} Studio Share Facebook group, I’ve been lucky to connect with crafters from all over the world. I’ve shared countless projects, techniques, tips, and stories, and along the way, I’ve learned just as much from you as I’ve taught.

Looking Ahead
As I reflect on these past 20 years, I’m filled with gratitude. To those of you who have been with me since the very beginning, I see you. To those who just discovered my blog, welcome! And to all of you in between, thank you for being part of this journey.
Through my events, classes, blog, and community spaces, you’ve built a supportive, creative family right alongside me. Because of you, I get to live this life as a full-time “creative chick,” and I don’t take that for granted for even a second.
And while today is about celebrating how far we’ve come, I’m also wicked excited for what’s ahead. I have so many new classes, events, and collaborations planned, and I can’t wait to keep sharing this creative adventure with you.

I distinctly remember encountering your creativity and brilliant wording at my first class with you in the Inspiration Station in CT—where you described the small stamps (RAWR specifically 🙂 )from Lawn Fawn as the gateway drug! I have been hooked on Lawn Fawn and your classes and inspiration since! I kept taking your classes at my local craft store as long as I could and then transitioned to online classes—I follow in you tube and instagram!

Twenty years ~ what a great accomplishment! I am not sure how I first found out about your classes but I made it to two of the Creative Art Journey Retreats before COVID. Your virtual art retreat during COVID was such a bright spot! I learned so much from you about stamping, inks, embellishments, but the best thing was learning about alcohol inks! I wish I had known about your classes when you lived right here in RI!

Hi Jenn, Congratulations on 20 years of doing this and I hope you continue for another 20 years. I am so happy I found you during the pandemic. Your online classes have been hands down spectacular! I look forward to taking many more online classes with you. I do already subscribe to all of the above. I have noticed, I subscribe to all but it is over two different email address, as my Instagram account is set-up with an email I do not use as often. Anyway, it is me. I love seeing your kitties too and creations with the kitties too. I use them for myself and tweak them to reflect my own cats.

I am curious about your classes and have considered taking them many times, I just haven’t quite made the leap yet. I love the designs and stuff, I’m a huge fan of Lawn Fawn so I may finally give the upcoming freebie a try to see if I can keep up and stuff (I’ve got a frustrating chronic illness (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome) that causes a ton of pain, but I’m trying really hard to do the things I love as much as I can anyway.) I used to visit the paper crafting store on Main St in Hyannis back in the day and dreamed about attending Crop on the Cape for many years before I actually signed up and attended. I”ve taken many virtual and in person classes with you and crop on the cape along with the art journey retreat have become annual events. I follow Facebook, insta and get your newsletter. I have participated in classes (in person at Papercraft Clubhouse and virtually) … and of course love Crop on the Cape. I don’t typically follow anyone on you tube (although that may be changing with the change to fb videos).

I always loved lawn fawn stamps but was intimidated by colouring them, thanks to you my lawn fawn stuff brings me so much joy.
