Get cracking on Christmas | shurkus.com

Hey everyone… it’s JULY!!! It’s the third Thursday. Do you know what that means?! Beach, sunshine, cookouts, open windows AND CHRISTMAS!

Yep, It’s Christmas in July!! I am trying to help you get started on your holiday cards. Ok, actually the truth is, I haven’t sent any holiday cards out the past couple years, and I wanted to change that THIS year. So, talking with my friends Chari and Cheiron, we decided to challenge one another to make some each month.

In honor of Christmas in July, I have invited a whole bunch more of my crafty friends to inspire you. Some are even offering prizes!

If you are visiting my blog for the first time or have not yet subscribed – be sure to do so! I share lots of handmade projects every week delivering them straight to your inbox! I also occasionally share information about crafty classes and new product releases I love. Subscribe here.

Ok, let’s dive into the FUN!!

Be sure to read to the end, because not only am I sharing a card, but my friend Susan is too AND we both have giveaways!!

Snow Friends

Creating this card I had a chance to play with TWO Neat and Tangled sets I hadn’t had a chance to yet. The adorable little bunny from Bunny Slopes and the snowman from Christmas Pagent work so well together.

Bunny Slopes, Neat and Tangled  Christmas Pageant, Neat and Tangled

I also LOVE to use non-traditional colors when creating my holiday cards. I get bored with the same old “red and green” So I played with Cracked Pistachio Distress Ink and Distress Oxide to ink smoosh the background, and ink blend the hillsides. I continued with the teal theme in coloring the bunny and snowman with Copic markers.

I added some Prisma Glitter details with a Quickie Glue Pen, and some Doodlebug Sprinkles I found in my stash while organizing my room.

Did you know that the Simon Says Stamp Spring Rain Ink Pad matches Cracked Pistachio Distress Ink PERFECTLY! That is what I used to stamp the sentiment and snowflakes.

Merry Christmas from Susan

There’s nothing better than colorful cardstock in my opinion, so I went all bold and cheery with red and green strips. It’s a super-fast way to make a big impact! With my ink swatch (dude, I HATE that word 😂) I was able to match colors perfectly. The merry comes from the Simon Says Stamp + CZ Design Coolest Yulest set, and the Christmas comes from Avery Elle, but it appears to be retired (sorry!). The Picture Book Deer from Simon Says Stamp adds a festive air to my Christmas in July creation. The little bow on her neck (there are female reindeer, right?) is from MFT’s Blueprints 26 die set. I was pretty stoked how the bottom of the deer nestled into the space created by the sentiment. It’s those little design victories that make me super happy! And my flamingos are waving hello!

Merry Christmas in July from me to you! Now get CRACKIN’ on your Christmas cards—STAT!

Awesome! Thank you for a chance to win this awesome giveaway!
The first time I made my own Christmas cards was last year. I started around October but didn’t get to finish until 2nd week if December 😫 because it got so busy with work. I think I send out around 30 cards. I will start early again this year so I can send them out on time and not having to rush myself 😣

Early November I get together with my husband and dogs and meet up with a local amateur photographer for some fun family pics. I usually send out around 100-150 cards ordered from a printing company with a few pictures from that year on it.
I am thinking this year I may order a few picture copies of and send them in homemade card to close friends and family.
It would justify buying stamps and dies from all these new releases 😉

This is a fab idea to start early on the Christmas creations. Beautiful colour palette on the snow friends card. The card with the strips of paper is a great way to use up the piles of scraps we accumulate. I’m a fairly new card maker so this will be my first year of making a large quantity of Christmas cards.

I love these cards and the idea of starting making early. I always think I will do it, but end up starting in October or November when it seems easier to feel festive But you’ve convinced me this year!

I post all of mine out around a week before the posting deadline and so I really need many of them made by early December. I like to have time to do some envelope art and use my Lettermate for addressing neatly as well as using seasonal postage stamps. Where I live, the Christmas stamps have their own release date so I always check that and get there on the day to secure a big batch of Christmas stamps. 🙂

Hi, Great post and AWESOME giveaway, THANKS !!! I do make Christmas cards, first I do the Caring Hearts Drive with Jennifer McGuire, I usually do about 50 -60, I could do more but i am OCD so i don’t do just plain cards, my cards have LOTS of layers and i do the insides both sides and i also do the back, I try not to because I know I can get more done if i just stick to one layer and just basic, but the OCD takes over, if you know anyone with it, it is NOT the funny disease everyone makes it out to be. also I always picture my grammy or grandpa opening that card. Also i make cards for family/friends, of course homemade and I try to send out 7 to 10 days before Christmas. I just really enjoy making cards it helps me to get my mind busy and off my pain, it is kind of like therapy. Thank you.

We send handmade Christmas cards- about 50. It’s nice because I work on them throughout the year so when Christmas is here we don’t have to stress about it. We’re trying a new thing where we include our year in review this year. We’re not sure how we will rock that but we are excited about it.

I usually make about 175 – 200 Christmas cards. If I get an early start they are all unique. If time gets away from me then I make 4 of a design. If time REALLY gets away from me, I supplement with (dare I say it) purchased cards. I usually mail them out a 1-2 weeks before Christmas.

I do send Christmas cards-about 80 of them. Some years I am good and make them all and some years I resort to store bought ones. I have to get busy because I only have 10 made so far.

I have made my own Christmas cards for several years and I usually make about 24, five or take. My card making game has stepped up over the last couple years, thanks to the purchase of my die cutter.

Such gorgeous cards! Jenn, love the cracked pistachio and Susan that pairing of the dear and sentiment was absolutely meant to be! Love them both! I do make cards to send, usually run out of time and have a backup stash of (gasp) store bought cards for the few that I don’t have enough time to finish… I make about 25 cards most are different styles because I am not good at mass producing, and if I am lucky they get in the mail a few days before Christmas (sigh). Thanks for sharing!

OMG the cards are awesome. I usually send around 30 cards to family and friends and they are handmade. I also make as much as I could for card drives. It sure feels real good when those get mailed.

i used to send handmade christmas cards, but it seem the sending of ‘cards’ in the mail with many non-crafters is on the way out.. and those that do get cards, dont see the difference unless they are a crafter too. I agree with you though, I get tired of red and green and like color variance. I do send cards to my crafing buds though; they appreciate them 🙂

I start making my cards early November because I am incredibly slow. I make around 20 for family and them I make CAS cards for Caring Hearts campaign. I mail them out by December 10th. I was a letter carrier for over 26 years so I know the importance of mailing early.

I LOVE SENDING CHRISTMAS CARDS!!! I usually send about 80 to 85 cards and they are NOT all handmade. (There are some people that just don’t “get it” so I send them store-bought!!) I aim to make around 50 cards each year…some years I do better than others. But it is something I really enjoy doing!! Merry Christmas!!!!

Christmas in July leaves me wishing for the cooler weather. I send out about 50 hand-made holiday cards every winter (too many friends & family are too many different religions to just do “Christmas” cards). I’m even crazy enough to have a theme for my cards: holiday songs. Every year I pick a different song and make a card based on a line or two (ie Deck the Halls, Frosty the Snowman, etc). I don’t think anyone’s caught on yet…

Love the idea of this hop and gettin’ crackin’. Christmas is what I do but I make tags, millions of tags I donate to local groups to sell for Christmas fund raising. But — last year I actually made 10 — didn’t send them to people, sent them to the Caring Hearts or whatever that Jennifer Mcguire was going to pass along to nursing homes. Like there aren’t enough where I live. . . I don’t send or make cards but I plan to put a toe in. Meanwhile thank you for this fabulous blog. And I just got the reindeer and love the way it was used here. The whole hop was terrific. TY!

I do send handmade Christmas cards out to list. Since I mail out about 50 each year and also like to have cards and tags for gift giving I like to save a bit of time by making 6 or so of each design at a time. So thankful for the MISTI which is super helpful. 🙂

ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS CARDS! As to making Christmas cards! I am a newbee just literally starting out! So I haven’t yet ever made Christmas cards! How many will I send out? Sadly not really any accept maybe to my parents and my Mother-in-law that would be about it! Because unfortunately everyone I use to send cards to quit sending! Now everyone sends Christmas wishes by computer! How sad is that!!! BUT I do plan on making cards for Christmas craft fairs this year! WOOHOO!! Of course being a newbee it probably won’t be OOOODLES just yet! HAHA!!! But I have to start somewhere! ALSO I wanted to say a big thank you in my email you sent information about how you use manicure blocks to erase your marker BOOBOO’S on your cards! That is really good to know! Because I imagine I will be making lots and lots of BOOBOO’s!! HaHa! Sorry for the lengthy post!! LOL!!!!

I make them all myself, and send them out all over the world! We love receiving cards in the mail, so we hope others do too!

Jenn and Susan, these cards are beautiful! I love making Christmas cards for family. My husband’s family has the tradition of exchanging Christmas cards with one another on Christmas Eve, and it’s so much fun to share them in person! This year I really want to mail Christmas cards to my crafty friends as well, so I really need to get cracking! 😁

Well you girls are so clever and motivated. I just can’t get into creating Christmas cards when it’s so hot outside! I usually send about 30 handmade Christmas cards (the ones I’ve made throughout the fall) to family and friends in Europe. Family and friends in the US (over 100) get the family photo/letter duo 😉 But yay for y’all – the stash is born.

I didn’t send Christmas cards last year. We were remodeling our kitchen. I don’t recommend doing this over the holidays! They were supposed to start in August and actually came in October.Plus I fell off my bike and broke my shoulder. I don’t recommend that either. So Christmas cards just didn’t happen. Maybe if I’d started them in July, I would’ve been fine. I love to send handmade cards and usually send 150.

I love making Christmas cards but feel so rushed at Christmas. This is s great motivator. I usually make 75 cards different styles for different people. I usually send them out a week before Christmas. Last year I had gotten all my cards prepped and ready to put together, address and I was going to do festive envelopes as well. Our house got it with the flu and we were all in bed so the cards didn’t get sent!! This year I am going to send them the first week of December

I definitely send Christmas cards! I’ve been making them for about 20 years now… Started way back when there was DOTS stamping company. I think that’s what it was called. Anyhoo… My homeschooling friends and I got together and made cards for hours to send out. I now send probably about 25-30. Back then I assembly lined it and made one design. Now pretty much each one is different! LOL

I always send holiday cards, even when I’m not really feeling the spirit of the season, and I often send 50 or more. Since I’ve found card-making, I ONLY send handmade cards and I try to match the card with the person to receive it. Love this idea of a blog hop; lots of great inspiration and the excitement of creating early is contagious.
