For this card I really wanted to focus on bold, happy color, and nothing makes me happier than a rainbow of hearts. 💕
I started by die cutting the Rounded Hearts Dies from Simon Says Stamp out of Distress Watercolor Cardstock. I love using watercolor cardstock anytime I’m working with Distress Paint because it can handle the moisture and movement of the paint without warping too much.
To add color, I squeezed a small amount of Distress Paint onto my craft sheet, lightly spritzed it with water, and then pressed each heart into the diluted paint. This “smoosh” technique gives such organic, watercolor-like results. The beauty of this technique is that no two pieces will ever look the same, those little variations and textures are what make it special.
Once everything was dry, I layered the hearts together to build that bold rainbow look. The dimension from stacking the die cuts really helps the design pop against the clean white card base.
For the sentiment, I used the “My Heart Is With You” die. I cut the top layer from Lawn Fawn Pixie Dust Sparkle cardstock for that subtle shimmer (because sparkle is always a good idea 😉) and the shadow layer from Lawn Fawn Black Licorice cardstock to ground everything and give it strong contrast against the bright hearts.
Using the same Black Licorice cardstock, I also die cut three of the smallest hearts to scatter along the design. After assembling the card, I added Glossy Accents to those tiny hearts for a little extra shine and texture. It’s a small detail, but it adds just the right finishing touch.
This card is such a great reminder that you don’t need a complicated layout when you have strong color and a bold sentiment. Let the dies and the paint do the work for you.
I’d love to know, are you a fan of the paint “smooshing” technique, or do you prefer blending inks for your backgrounds? And what color combination would you try with these layered hearts? Let me know in the comments! 💖
