Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge: Make Your Own Background

09/10/2014

Time for a NEW Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge

I am back with a Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge card! This week’s challenge is Make Your Own Background – Sometimes a background of a card gets overlooked, or its always easy to dive into your pattern paper stash- but how fun and unique to create your own with all the papercrafting supplies you have!?  The design team is featuring supplies from Gelatos made by Faber Castell this week. I had purchased a few single colors of gelatos in the past, but I was ready to dive in feet first and I splurged on the 34 piece gift set of gelatos!

Since I had some duplicate colors I have a Blog Giveaway for you- be sure to read to the bottom to see the details!

I am really pleased with how this card came out it is a very different style for me- so let me get started in explaining it!

I first used some washi tape to hold down the Simon Says Stamp Waves stencil over a piece of Distress Watercolor paper. I then rubbed different colors of the gelatos through the stencil. Starting with the lightest color and layered them to the darkest. This looked like a scribbly mess but I stuck with it. With the stencil still positioned I used a baby wipe to blend and smooth out the color.

Once I got the background to look the way I wanted, I then colored some pinks on a scrap piece of Distress Watercolor paper, blending it out with a baby wipe- to diecut the Butterfly Delights from Memory Box. I did the same thing with greens to diecut the Straight Stalks die from Memory Box. I used Multi-Matte Medium to adhere all my little bits. I squeezed a glob out on my Ranger craft sheet and used the best applicator tool ever, my finger to put the glue on the stalks and butterflies. I didn’t want all the butterflies to be flat so for those I only put adhesive on the center of them, and I pinched their wings inward a bit.

Once I had all those teeny butterflies on the card, I cut a strip of Distress Watercolor Paper to stamp the sentiment on. I rubbed the Metallic Melon Gelato right on the stamp, lightly misted with water and stamped it. I like the watercolor look this gives and the sentiment “hello beautiful” from the Simon Says Stamp featuring Mama Elephant Summer Garden stamp set is quickly becoming one of my faves!

I cut the sentiment into a banner, and used foam tape to adhere it to the card. One final detail is I added some clear wink of stella glitter pen on some of the butterflies.

I think this card is pretty different for me- but I am enjoying it! I love how card challenges really stretch your creativity and get you out of a rut.

Ok- so now it’s time for YOU to enter the challenge.

Just by playing along (creating a card where you made your own background) and linking up your project to the SSS Wednesday Challenge post you can qualify to enter a $50 shopping voucher to the Simon Says Stamp store.

One lucky winner will be chosen at random, it could be you!

I love your card and the colors are awesome! When you do the gelatos like that do you have to add a fixative or anything or just give it time to dry?

Hi Jennifer, Thank you for your comment 🙂 I haven’t used anything to set them, they are very similar to other watercolors and every thing seems to stay put just fine 🙂 Let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Jen, I think your card turned out wonderfully. I love that you even used your gelatos to make your butterflies POP!!! Very very cute idea. I only have a couple of gelatos, so needless to say, I haven’t really played with them that much. Hmmmm, I may have to rethink that. lol… Anyways, I am already a subbie and I really am glad as I love seeing all the creative things you do. Thanks so much for the chance to win. Hugs Lisa G

I have a few gelatos and every time I try to use them I get flustered and feel like whatever I’ve made just doesn’t come out as nice as when I see others using them. Looking at your card encourages me to try again 😀
