Easy Steps to Create Mixed Media Cards
I’ve been diving back into my art journal and sharing 30 days of art journaling through quick, little videos on my Instagram. I know that whenever we create mixed media cards during my Creative Journey Art Retreats, there’s often some initial hesitation—but in the end, everyone is thrilled with their results! So, when I came across this kit, I knew I had to share a simple tutorial to help take the fear out of mixed media and make the process fun and approachable for you.
1. Start by wetting the tip of your Distress Watercolor Pencil and rub it around onto Distress Watercolor Cardstock. Dry this with the Ranger Heat Tool.
2. Rub a wet Distress Watercolor Pencil directly onto stamp.
3. Stamp on background.
4. Spritz water droplets with the Distress Sprayer. Dry this with the Ranger Heat Tool.
5. Choose another background stamp and another color of Distress Watercolor Pencils. Rub the wet pencil all over the stamp.
6. Stamp it once on the background.
7. Mist a little water onto the stamp with the Distress Sprayer
8. Stamp it again on the background. Dry this with the Ranger Heat Tool.
9. When the tip of your Distress Watercolor Pencil is wet, take a wet paintbrush and swipe pigment off the tip of the pencil.
10. Add splatters to your background. Dry this with the Ranger Heat Tool.
11. Choosing another color of Distress Watercolor Pencil, rub the wet pencil onto another collage image, stamp onto your background.
12. Stamp this image a few times, don’t add more Distress Watercolor Pencil, just mist a little water with the Distress Sprayer onto the stamp to get variation in your stamping.
13. Spritz water droplets with the Distress Sprayer.
14. Dry this with the Ranger Heat Tool.
15. Choose your main focal image, stamp in a black ink, without reinking, stamp it one or two more times
16. Choose other smaller collage images, stamp on your background. Think about placement. Don’t be afraid to stamp off the background, or stamp in different directions.
Some other fun things you can do:
Layer up. Use a paper distresser to edge some collage elements, ink the edges with Distress Ink and a tiny blending tool. Add these to your background.
Stamp over these collage elements.
Add some Distress Rock Candy with Distress Collage Medium to the focal image on the card.
I hope this post helped take away the fear of mixed media cards! If you want to learn more, and have some guidance in creating Mixed Media cards, be sure to subscribe to my email newsletter as I plan on launching some fun online classes this year!
