Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge: Use Your Favorite Technique or Product

I am back with a Simon Says Stamp Wednesday Challenge card! Thank you for joining us for the Friends or Super Hero challenge and we hope you will all join us again this week too. This week the challenge is Use Your Favorite Technique and/or Product! Have fun with whatever is inspiring you to be creative and enter up to 5 times! 🙂

We are showcasing Ranger this week. You don’t have to use them to join in but if you have some we would love to see them used. As always Simon Says Stamp will be giving away $50 voucher to shop at the fabulous Simon Says Stamp Store.

So, if you follow my blog you can imagine the happy dance i was doing when I was creating my card for this challenge- first you tell me to use my favorite product and/or technique- YES! THEN you tell me to use Ranger products… ok, twist my arm! Ha!

The only problem was trying to cram in everything I wanted to on just a card. I considered doing a canvas so I could fit it all, and then my creative juices went running!

I remember how much I loved creating the backgrounds for this mini book tutorial I created for Ranger. So I decided I wanted to try one out as a background on a card. I decided to play with stamping into Texture paste. I love how yummy it looks with the Distress Spray Stains spritzed onto it and how it dries differently in the nooks and crannies.

I have listed all the supplies below and they are linked to Simon Says Stamp for easy shopping.

Starting your background:

• Gather some Ranger Distress Watercolor Cardstock ( cut it to 4.25″ x 5.5″. I used Ranger Mixed Media Paper and I didn’t love how it reacted to water so I think I need to play with it some more), Texture Paste and a texture stamp. I used the rays from Tim Holtz’s Bitty Grunge Cling Stamps. I recommend only using red rubber stamps and not clear for this technique.
• Using a palette knife spread the Texture Paste onto the cardstock. I concentrated on the top of and sides of the cardstock. You want this to be random and don’t put a lot of thought into it.
• While the Texture Paste is still wet, we are going to stamp into it. I used the rays from the Bitty Grunge cling stamp set. Put them on an acrylic block and gently mist with water. Then stamp into the texture paste and lift away. Clean any paste that might be on your stamp.
• Let the Texture Paste dry, or if you are impatient like me you can gently dry it with your heat tool.
• Once the Texture Paste is dry spritz 2-3 Distress Spray Stains. I used Wild Honey and Picked Raspberry.
• Spritz with water to help the colors blend and move around.

Coloring the Crazy Bird:

• I started by rubbing some Distress Ink on my Ranger Craft Sheet to create a palette. I used Twisted Citron and Peacock Feathers. (my Peacock Feathers Distress Ink pad needs a re-inking and isn’t that juicy so I spritzed some Distress Spray Stain instead.)
• Watercolor one of the Crazy Birds
• Gently spritz some water droplets on the bird. The new Distress Sprayer is perfect for this. Let set a few minutes and then blot to reveal a texture left behind from the water.

Adding more texture to the background:

• Using the hatch marks stamp from the Bitty Grunge stamp set I rubbed a little Dina Wakley Media Paint in Night on the stamp and stamped with it on the edges of the background (pictured in the final image)

Creating a fun party hat & finishing touches:

• Squeeze a few colors of Distress Paints directly on your Craft Sheet. I used Peacock Feathers, Twisted Citron, Picked Raspberry and Wild Honey.
• Spritz the paint with water
• Drag a piece of Distress Watercolor Cardstock through the paint and pick it up. Spritz a little more water to move the color around and help blend the colors.
• Dry the paint with a heat tool.
• With a pencil draw a triangle onto the cardstock, cut it out.
• Using the magic pencil (a Stabilo All pencil) draw open circles onto your party hat .
• Gently go over your lines with a waterbrush.
• Using a Uniball White Gel Pen add details to your circles.
• I stamped the brick stamp from the Bitty Grunge stamp set in white gesso on the bottom of the background.
• Fussy cut your Crazy Bird out and add it and your party hat to your card.
• I shadowed the bird and created a ground for him to stand on with the Magic Pencil.
• I embellished the top of the hat with a button from my stash.
• I added some Rock Candy Distress Stickles to the Texture Paste rays and the circles on the party hat.
• I chose a sentence from Tim Holtz Small Talk stickers and adhered this background to a kraft card that is 4.25″ x 5.5″
