Distress Inks came into the papercrafting world in 2004. I started using them immediately, I still even have some of my original ink pads. The world of Distress has grown over the years with new and inspiring supplies. My goal with these technique classes is to teach you the fundamentals about the medium and inspire you to use them in your creative projects. I use some form of Distress on approx 80% of my creations. I guess you can say I am addicted to Distress!
This class is sharing with you things I have learned, and my experiences with Distress Spray Stains and Distress Oxide Sprays. We will also be exploring some of the mediums in the Distress line. What I hope you will get from this class is a better understanding of these supplies. I hope you will be inspired to play more, and be happy with your results!
I have taken many classes with Tim Holtz, and Ranger Ink over the years resulting in a lot of learning. I am also a Tim Holtz Maker and create projects with his various products resulting in a lot of experimenting. I hope you will find my knowledge helpful, informative, and inspiring.
This class is for anyone who would like to learn more about Distress Spray Stains, Distress Oxide Sprays and Distress Mediums.
All of the class videos will be available in the private Facebook group. If you can’t attend the class LIVE you can watch the videos whenever it is convenient for you.

Order class supplies
Jenn does not ship kits for this class, so there are some supplies you should have on hand. Jenn will also provide details of a few items that should be prepped before class. You can find this list of stores and links to their shops and online shops here.

Supply List:
Once you sign up for the class you have access to the class resource page, there is a downloadable handout for the supply list on that page.
Required Supplies- Even though I list these are required, in reality, anything can be substituted in class, and you can experiment with the supplies you have. All supplies linked at the bottom
- At least 3 Distress Spray Stains and/or 3 Distress Oxide Sprays. See the specific colors Jenn will be using below, but use the colors YOU love. You can get away with just one kind of Distress spray, Jenn will be comparing and showing techniques with both, you can always purchase some after class and practice the techniques if you like what is shown in class.
- Distress Mixed Media Heavystock and Distress Kraft Heavystock – you can use different surfaces, but you will get different results. Jenn highly recommends these and will go over their advantages in class. She recommends having at least 40- 4.25″ X 5.5″ sheets of BOTH- we are going to be playing and making A LOT of backgrounds. Purchasing one package of each will work.
- Distress Mediums. See the specific mediums Jenn will be using below in the visual supply list, but you do not need to have all of these, use what you have, and see which ones intrigue/inspire you after class.
- Variety of stencils. See the specific stencils Jenn will be using below in the visual supply list, but use the stencils YOU love.
- Water Mister Spray Bottle – Jenn recommends the Distress Sprayer
- Mister Bottle filled with Isopropyl alcohol for a quick clean up of inky stencils
- Heat Tool – Jenn recommends the Ranger Heat Tool and not an embossing gun
- Flour Sack Cloth
- paper towels
- A sheet of acetate/transparency – you can use plastic from stamp packaging
- A non-porous surface to work on – Jenn recommends the Tim Holtz/Tonic Glass Mat so you have glass, and a craft sheet to work on, but just a craft sheet will work as well.
- container for water that will hold your stencils
- apron, and wear your “paint” clothes
Optional Supplies- These items are not required to complete the class
- Distress Foundry
- SPLAT box, or contained area to spray in
- gloves if you don’t want to get inky

I believe this was my 5th or 6th class with Jenn. I didn’t have a lot of experience with or understanding of Tim Holtz’s Disress and Oxide Ink pads. Through Jenn’s class she brought me out of my comfort zone to experiment with these new mediums. Now, I use (and love) Distress Inks to watercolor.

This was a wonderful class. I did this with a friend and had lots of fun. We combined products that we had and got to a point that we were listening to Jenn, but doing our own experimenting. I still am using those backgrounds and have more bases prepped for round 2! I love all the inspiration and encouragement to use what you have and simply have fun.

What a fun class! Just when you think you can’t have more fun with ink and paper you take this class. Literally enabling you to colour outside the lines, get inky, let the magic happen. You never get the same effect twice. On top of that you are using stencils in a whole new way. There is something zen like watching the distress oxide and stain sprays flow with the water and then transform when they dry. Do this class!!!! Distress all the things!

Jenn’s class is full of information and paced so the student can watch the technique then do it with her never feeling left behind. Of curse they are recorded s you can pause or rewind whenever needed as well. S,he encourages using your own supplies when possible but gives all the right tips for the best results. Most of all she encourages us to have fun, which we all need in today’s world.

Another great class. Jenn does a great job explaining techniques and having a variety of things to try. I also love how she keeps “required” supplies low and even says the required items aren’t all needed. Classes can be taken live or you can do them on your own time (which is great as I can’t always attend the live) and Jenn encourages you to explore and have fun.

This was my first class with Jenn (not my last), and it was so much fun – I learned a lot. I love the mixed media look but hadn’t done a whole lot until this weekend and I used some of my stash that has been languishing in boxes and on shelves. Jenn is a wonderful teacher and because she demonstrated the technique first, then did it again, I was able to keep up and now I have a nice selection of backgrounds to use in my cards. Take the class, you’ll have a blast!

So much fun!! I was a little nervous since I didn’t have exactly the same supplies Jenn was using, but I’m so glad I took the class. I just watched it live and now I’m rewatching and creating with Jenn. I’m having fun just creating without thinking too much about the finished result. Every background I create I love and want to make more!

I absolutely loved this class! And all of Jenn’s classes! This class allowed you to be creative and experiment with your supplies. I made so many backgrounds and already used some in My DT cards. Jenn is an amazing teacher and makes the class so fun!

I love Jenn’s classes! So fun, informative, and inspiring! I can’t wait to play more with my inks and sprays now that I have learned some new techniques. If you’re considering taking one of her classes, GO FOR IT! You won’t regret it.

I highly recommend this class, actually I recommend all of Jenn Shurkus’ classes. If you’ve never played with the Mixed Media concept, you’ll be hooked once you learn all the techniques Jenn teaches in this fabulous class. I got my hands inky, played with sprays, stencils and pastes and it was so liberating and FUN!
